After creating the design for my monoprints I created six prints.

This image has all three primary colors we used: cyan, magenta and yellow. All the colors in the prints were created by combining these inks.

This print is an analgous color scheme. The final step in creating this print was adding the lines. I scratched them into the plexiglass plate, addded black ink and wiped the surface clean. The ink that remained in the scratches was transferred to the print in the press.

I like this print. It is flat, but has areas that appear to be embossed. You can see the illusion in the detail shot below.

We have just begun our third design project, using monotype printing. I’m jazzed because I’ve been looking forward to taking a printmaking class next spring and now I get a sneak peak!
First we had to create our design. Here is mine.

Our next step is to make printing plates. This involves cutting plexiglass to the size of our design and then beveling the edges by filing. Did you know that plexi-glass has tiny little slivers that are just as evil as the ones in fiberglass? We use lots of damp towels while filing to remove the dust. I have one plate finished, two more to go. Stayed tuned for what comes next!

I am amazed at how quickly drawing skills progress when you are actually drawing every day. Learning to draw a face is mainly understanding basic proportions then practicing! Lyric Kinard decided to draw a face every day for a year; you can follow her progress on her blog. Check out her artwork, the classes she has coming up and her book, which (ahem) includes a little piece of mine.

It has been almost a year since I posted on my blog, and a lot of that time has whooshed by. I’m back in college and halfway through my second semester. I am preparing for a school trip to Italy and Paris in May. And I’ve been doing lots of drawing, designing and writing this semester. I even get to try some Piaget experiments with preschoolers next week for my Developmental Psychology class.

Mom and Baby Gibbons
Santa Fe has a zoo, how cool is that? Today we went to see the gibbons, there are three, dad (an elderly gentleman), mom and baby. I could just sit and watch them for hours. Mama gibbon is incredibly graceful. She scoops up her baby and swings the two of them across the enclosure in one fluid movement. Gibbons are the smallest ape. One difference between apes and monkeys: apes do no have tails.
